HIGH
PERFORMANCE GLIDER SINGLE-SEAT FAI OPEN CLASS
The ASW-22BL Is simply the most successful open class
sailplane of all time. Magnificent performance combined
with ease of handling makes it a reasonable choice for
pilots of medium experience levels. The 22BL has won
almost every world championship since it's introduction.
It won four world championships, more than any other
single open class design. It is interesting that this
was the first in a very successful string of AS ships
which use a higher aspect ratio and thus higher wing
loading than our competitors.
This
family of ships (ASH-25, ASH-26 and ASW-27) is proving
very successful. Other design features one expects from
Schleicher are very low control forces, Safety Cockpit,
excellent flight characteristics, ease of assembly,
and excellent glide path control (40 degree flaps).
DEVELOPMENT
1997 saw the installation of the engine system from
the ASH-26 and ASH-25M into the 22BLE. This is a rotary
engine originally developed by Norton Motorcycle in
England. This was later developed into an aircraft engine
by the Mid-West engine Co. in England. This powerplant
is better than previous two stroke engines because it
has a very high power to weight ratio, it is very smooth
operating, and very quiet. It was a very logical evolution
from the 26 to the 25 to the 22. We have now combined
the world's best sailplane with the best available aircraft
engine. It is a very powerful, smooth running, dependable,
and quiet installation. It is the same design as in
the other ships with the engine permanently hidden inside
the fuselage, with only the propeller mast moving up
and down. Marketplace acceptance for the this engine
in the ASH-26E has shown it's clear advantages. Again
the 22BL is quite simply the best there is.
